Social Media and Crime: Is Facebook the New Criminal Catcher?

Facebook-hoaxPairing up with technology

In a world that revolves around social media, it’s easy to forget about the effects – both good and bad – that social networks have on our daily lives. From cyber bully attacks to privacy issues, many see it as a negative influence on the upcoming generation. However in the world of crime, social media now serves as a vital tool for keeping citizens safe.

According to a recently published article on DNAinfo New York , the NYPD’s new Facial Recognition Unit is now using photos posted via Facebook and Instagram to track down wanted criminals.

“It is the one time something you see on a television show is actually working in the real world,” stated a top police official and previous technology skeptic.

A prime example of this can be seen in the recent case of New York gang member suspect, Melvin Colon. According to CNN.com , “The suspected New York gang member posted public photos on Facebook that showed him flashing gang signs but made private more incriminating posts, including references to past violent crimes and threats against others.” With police officers able to access such information, the wanted criminal was ultimately captured and faced with charges of murder, along with weapons and narcotics-related crimes.

Spread the word

In addition to pairing social media with high class crime technology, law enforcement agencies are also using Facebook and Twitter as a way to connect with the public and spread awareness about potentially dangerous criminals on the loose.

During the recent Boston Marathon Bombing, citizens across the country received frequent updates through popular social networks. In fact, slightly more than half (56%) of 18-29 year olds received status updates regarding the terrifying boston bomber manhunt through social networks, according to Pew Research Center .
