In order to combat the rash of burglaries recently occurring in their neighborhood, several small businesses in East Austin have started using technology in innovative ways in order to keep their stores—and their livelihoods—secure.
Many small businesses in East Austin have been victims of an unbelievable outbreak of robberies over the last few weeks, as burglars have recently hit a clothing store, an art consulting firm, a yoga studio, and a coffee shop—all in the same neighborhood. According to reports, the businesses have decided to team up with police in response to the crimes, and “they’ll do it using their phones and computers as crime fighting tools”. While the need for this kind of a program is a little discouraging, many of the small business owners are optimistic that it will have positive results for everyone involved.
Kelly Abshire, owner of Hot Mama’s Espresso Bar in East Austin, is one of the most avid advocates for the program, and according to KEYE Austin, she is hopeful that the communication that the program allows will finally be able to put a stop to the crime in her neighborhood. “If we are more communicative, together we can kind of deter crime,” Abshire said.
The program—which is run through an app named Next Door—gives the small business owners the ability to easily communicate amongst each other, and, if necessary, notify the police about anything alarming. Both police and small business owners alike are in agreement that with this open communication, crimes may be able to be stopped before they even occur. “We’ll all be in the know of who’s doing what,” Abshire added.
