To ensure that roadways are safe for travel, clean up crews clear debris from sides of highways and major thoroughfares. Although this safety measure is taken to help motorists get to their destinations with ease, some individuals are not as considerate of others. Most notably, the person or persons throwing rocks onto IH-35 while motorists are driving. These randomly timed criminal acts continue to endanger the lives of travelers.
Rock throwing onto IH-35 has been happening for the past three years, and shows no sign of stopping. As recently as January 6, 2016 two rock throwing cases were reported to Austin Police, raising the total of incidents to 50. According to local news source KXAN, both incidents took place in two different locations, within 15 minutes of each other and several miles apart.[1]
The victims of the IH-35 and Braker Lane incident were a married couple, their 8-month old daughter, and the man driving them in his taxi cab. The cab’s windshield was hit by a rock while they were traveling northbound from Austin Bergstrom Airport to their Round Rock home.
“It really sends shivers down our spine to think if the rock bounced off the seat and hit our baby,” the mother said. Austin Cab said their driver is also okay.[2]
The next incident occurred eight miles away near IH-35 and Cesar Chavez. No life-threatening injuries were reported in this incident.
Although the Austin Police Department is working with Federal and local agencies to find the person or persons responsible for these occurrences, which Commander Kurtis Krause believes are being executed from bridges and moving cars.
